Obituary Template & Simple Writing Guide

A practical obituary structure to help you write a personal remembrance with accurate details and specific memories.

Start with verified details

Write the full name as the family wants it printed. You may include dates or age if you choose; avoid publishing full birth dates, home addresses or other personal information unnecessarily. Check with the family before sharing sensitive details.

Add the person behind the facts

Choose two or three specific memories: a tradition, a favourite pastime, a kindness or a place that mattered. Personal details often communicate more than a long list of generic adjectives. You do not need to describe every part of a life.

A fill-in starting structure

[Name] is remembered with love by [people or community]. [A specific memory, contribution or favourite activity]. We will remember [a personal detail]. A gathering will take place at [confirmed time and venue, if public]. [Optional final remembrance]. Replace every bracket before sharing.

An obituary is not the same as a eulogy

An obituary is usually a written announcement or life summary. A eulogy is a spoken tribute. Our program biography panel can hold a short obituary or tribute, but this tool does not submit notices to newspapers or publish public obituaries.
