How to Write a Short Eulogy: Structure & Examples
Use specific memories to shape a short spoken tribute, with a simple outline and guidance for preparing a printed excerpt.
Choose a small number of memories
Begin by explaining your connection to the person. Share one or two moments that show who they were, then finish with a farewell. A tribute does not need elaborate language to be meaningful.
An illustrative opening
“When I think of [name], I think of [a familiar place or habit]. One moment I will always remember is [your own memory]. It showed me [what that moment meant to you].” This is a writing structure, not a factual statement about your loved one.
Prepare for speaking
Read your draft aloud, time yourself, and confirm the available time with the person leading the gathering. Use short paragraphs and bring a printed copy. Ask someone you trust to check names and details.
Put an excerpt in the program
The four-panel template has a limited biography area. Choose a short extract for the printed program rather than shrinking an entire speech into a small space. The full speech can be prepared separately.
